Student Owned Businesses

During the pandemic, students at Banneker had time to be at home and pick up a hobby they are passionate about, which some have now turned into businesses.

Train of Thought created a form for students to answer questions about themselves and their businesses. The categories have been separated by the type of business they have.

What made you want to create your business? I started during the summer of 2020 because I wanted to find a hobby and enjoy making bangles. With the great support system, I have around me I was able to stay in business and keep growing over the best year and a half.

What was your goal when creating your business? I did not really have a goal when starting my business since I started it as a hobby and a way for me to try something new.

Any advice to upcoming entrepreneurs? Stay motivated, don’t give up, be open to learning new things, and don’t let anyone stop you from doing something you’re passionate about.

How long have you had your business?: Almost 2 years

What made you want to create your business? I love all types of jewelry, and I always wanted to create some of my own like anklets, etc. I started during the pandemic as a hobby and grew it into a business because I wanted to share the pieces I created with more people.

What was your goal when creating your business? My goal was to show people how to wear different types of jewelry and how to make each piece unique for each individual. I want other people to feel good when they wear my jewelry.

Any advice to upcoming entrepreneurs? My advice is don’t knock your hustle. If you have an eye or passion for something, don’t belittle it just because others are doing it or because people don’t believe in it. If you love it, dedicate yourself to your craft and people will attract to it.

How long have you had your business? Since 2019

What made you want to create your business? I needed money, and I wanted to have the experience for an even larger business plan I have for later in life. I would like to own my own major cosmetics industry, so I needed to know what it was like being the worker before being the boss.

What was your goal when creating your business? I wanted it to be slightly big and acknowledged, but it’s not my dream, just a good hustle. When the money wasn’t consistent enough, I slowed down and got a job in retail instead.

Any advice to upcoming entrepreneurs? Be patient with yourself, especially if it is your passion. Keep going because the people will certainly respond to someone who is consistent and maintains professionalism.

Business Name: koo.kiwiidecor

How long have you had your business? One month

What made you want to create your business? After collecting photocards and enjoying decorating top loaders to store them in, I decided that I’d try out doing commissions and decorating top loaders for other people to purchase.

What was your goal when creating your business? When I decided to create my business, I created it with the goal to provide a safe and aesthetically pleasing storage space for things like IDs, Photocards for collecting, Vaccine Cards and more!

Any advice to upcoming entrepreneurs? Having multiple businesses before this one and having attended business classes, my best advice would be to: 1. Have patience, 2: Have good marketing and advertising! Patience is the most important thing to have when owning a business because customers do not come out of thin air. This is where having good marketing and advertising comes in. Having a good marketing and advertising strategy will help expand your business, bringing in new customers and a larger target audience!
