Banneker’s Security!

Have you ever heard one of your friends or someone in the hallway talking about what the security guards actually do? Well we have, and when we thought about it, we really didn’t have a clear idea of what they do. So we’ve decided to go straight to the source.

During lunch, we talked to one of our officers, Officer Brown to get her insight into their job duties, and according to her, here’s what they do.

When students start arriving in the morning, they’re usually working the

metal detectors until about 9:15. Then, they begin walking around, monitoring the hallways, making sure everyone is in class and not skipping by hiding in the bathrooms or in any other unoccupied classrooms or areas.

The security guards also have a schedule, which they don’t pick. It depends on the school they’re at, which they don’t choose either. They have different types of schedules, 8 a.m. to 4:30 pm, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Officer Brown explained to us that some officers would rather come to Banneker because it’s quiet and there’s nothing they really have to do because fights and other altercations aren’t that prominent here. On the other hand, some officers would rather not come to Banneker because there’s too much walking around the hallways.

There are many components to keeping Banneker together, and our security guards are just a piece of the entire puzzle. We should appreciate them more than we do!
