As the holidays are passing by and approaching, the Banneker Train of Thought conducted a Google survey to gather some insight on how the Banneker community celebrates different fall and winter holidays.
Fifty percent of respondents said they have already done some fall and winter activities. Some of these activities range from: eating pumpkin flavored things, going to the carnival, the fair, farm festivals, pumpkin patches, trick-or-treating, baking pies and carving pumpkins.
Seventy-one percent of respondents celebrate Halloween, while 28.6% do not. The Banneker students who celebrate Halloween did things like dressing up, trick-or-treating with younger siblings, eating candy, dressing up their pets in Halloween themed outfits and spending time with family and friends.
Eighty-six percent of respondents celebrate Thanksgiving, while 14.3% of respondents do not. Those who do celebrate Thanksgiving celebrated by gathering and eating dinner with family, eating cultural foods such as pan con pollo, rice, chicken, turkey, shrimp, traditional Ethiopian foods, tamales and playing games like Lotería (a Mexican bird game with beans), cooking with family, visiting family members and grandparents and so much more.
Ninety-three of respondents celebrate Christmas while 7.1% do not. The students who celebrate Christmas do things like eating dinner, playing games, opening presents, going to church, eating Pan con pollo, tamales, atole de elote, visiting family members, throwing parties, Hispanic traditions such as opening gifts exactly at midnight with extended family, karaoke, Lotería, Uno, Twister, watching iconic Christmas movies, matching pajamas with family, Ethiopian traditions such as ending a fast and celebrating with food and family on January 7th, enjoying a big breakfast and more.
One respondent stated that on New Year’s Eve, they travel to their grandmother’s home to watch the New York Times Square production. Additionally, they then go to church at 11 pm and celebrate the rest of the night with church members.

A majority of the respondents favor Christmas!
Some also shared their favorite fall and winter activities which were, decorating their homes with Christmas decorations, Christmas cooking, seeing Christmas lights with family, the fair, winter break, trick-or-treating, and watching Christmas movies!
