On Friday, April 12, Banneker had the Honor Societies’ Induction Ceremony. From the junior and senior class, there were 82 new inductees into the National Honor Society. There were 18 inductees into the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (Spanish Honor Society) and 13 inductees into the Société Honoraire de Français (French Honor Society). Additionally, there were 21 inductees in Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society).
The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS provides schools with a values-based framework to elevate a culture of scholarships, service, leadership, and character. The NHS recognizes young scholars who have demonstrated excellence through their academic achievements based on objective criteria, including grades and test scores.
At Banneker, only juniors and seniors who have attended the school for at least three complete semesters are eligible for induction into the Benjamin Banneker Honor Society. To be inducted students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.20 and no Honor Code violations. In addition, students must have satisfactory Community Laboratory and Citizenship grades.
Students can be inducted into multiple honor societies as long as they meet the requirements for each one.
Senior Priscila De La Cruz expressed that “it is a privilege to be selected by teachers to be recognized and a part of an Honor Society.” Another senior, Jaylin Solis, said that “being part of the Honor Society is meaningful to me because the hard work at Banneker has paid off.” Most of the students being inducted are honored and proud of their academic achievements and being rewarded is a capstone to academic accomplishments.
