Each year, Valentine’s Day fills up every street corner, store, and restaurant with tons of pink, red, and white decorations. But why? Valentine’s Day is a day to commemorate two men from Rome who were executed on February 14th, one of them by the name of Valentine.
In the present day, we see various ways of celebrating this holiday. For Valentine’s Day at Banneker this year, there was an all-day community service scheduled, so the Train of Thought went out to see how some of our Banneker Achievers spent their time on this holiday.
Starting off with our 12th graders, India Goldson helped clean her community service site for Valentine’s Day – and to celebrate after, Goldson and her friends went shopping for treats!
A person who stood out on the typical outing with friends was Jazzlyn Dominguez, a senior here at Banneker, who enjoyed a nice outing with her friends calling it “Galentine’s.” Since Valentine’s Day was a full community service day, she helped her community by assisting students and teachers. Afterwards, they went out to gather at a Korean BBQ restaurant to enjoy some savory Korean food. She says that she had so much fun. It was a nice break from her schoolwork.
While most people like to go out with their friends, there are those who spend time with their partners. They enjoy wonderful things like shopping, eating out, or just spending time with each other. Seniors Marcell Steele and Yadira Castro-Hercules both spent their Valentine’s Day with their partners. Steele, before going out with his partner, assisted with incoming freshman interviews. Afterwards, he went out to eat with his partner. He took some pictures with her to celebrate the day of love. Castro-Hercules had to assist in her community service until 3pm and then had a small date with her partner.
Most Banneker students spent their Valentine’s Day in several ways this school year. Many were fulfilling their responsibilities at their community site. While, Banneker staff was having interviews for the incoming first-year students. Students decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day by showing appreciation and love towards their friends or significant others.
